Description

A second test image to see if I can get the 2x Televue Powermate dialed in. Well, most of the image is ok, I was very happy about the light gathering at f/14, but ok, M42 is a bright object. I do have some dimmer objects gathered already in L at least, I will see what they will show. The stars at the edges are still not good enough, made a mistake when taking the RGB channels to turn the focal distance in the wrong direction, definitely got worse. The next clear skies, I will adjust that! Still, the image that I obtained with this test trial was worth a post (Trapezium well visible). And if you consider trying it as well, the next images will tell you more if it is worth doing or not. Definitely had to choose the 2x2 binning, otherwise the pixel scale would have been way too low. Was also nice to process much much smaller images coming from the ASI6200 😊.
One other note that is interesting: you need to take perfect flats since the magnification really exposes the slightest imperfections, I was stunned when I looked at the flats how dirty they were, not visible at "normal" focal lengths!

Title: Flats Comparison

Description: Ok, I have to admit, there was probably (from where I have NO idea) more dust on the several plates in the 2x version, still, one can see that the 2x flats really show the "little" dust specs much more. To be fair, both images are STF stretched, they do not look AS bad in the original.

Title: Preview 1: Galaxy Season - Leo Triplet comparison with my old image

Description: Wanted to see what the original stacked images in L look like in comparison, just to make sure if the 2x Powermate is something to consider for galaxy season. Both images are original and just STF'ed in PI. I say yes after that ... I will use the Powermate more often in Spring!

Title: Preview 2: Galaxy Season - Comparison with Gary's image that really intrigued me

Description: Ok, I had to compare here Gary's final image with my STFed image of the same area. Star aligned them, my image is of course way wider. Clearly visible that Gary's image has better resolution and details, also the stars are quite nicer. Nevertheless, I am already happy how far this Powermate got me. And no ... I am not hired by Televue and do not get any compensation for this 😊.
Gary, I hope it was ok to use your wonderful image! Please look at his full resolution image at: https://www.astrobin.com/full/ffmpdz/0/?nc=collection&nce=1924&mod=&real=
